Pterocarya fraxinifolia, known as Wing Nut, is a native of Iran and was introduced into Britain in the 1780s.
It is a beast of a tree, growing as wide as it is tall so not one for a garden!
It can sucker so it is best planted at least 20 metres away from any other tree in a parkland setting and often thrives best near a lake or river.
Pterocarya fraxinifolia has a deeply fissured bark at maturity and produces a mass of dark green leaves and summer catkins which in turn produce tow winged nuts.
Thriving on most soils, it does best on moist and fertile ground.
Mature Height: 17-22m
