Acer cappadocicum 'Rubrum,' the Caucasian Maple, was introduced into the UK in the late 1830s. Its young leaves emerge red before turning green in summer and then back to red, gold, and yellow before dropping in the autumn.
A deciduous tree native to the Caucasus region and parts of Asia, it has a broad, rounded crown, making it an excellent choice for providing shade in larger gardens or parklands. Aside from its ornamental appeal, this tree is widely planted for its aesthetic value in landscapes, parks, and gardens. Its colourful foliage in the fall makes it a popular choice for autumn displays.
It thrives best on moist but well-drained soils and is suited to rural rather than urban areas where the ground can be more compacted. Acer cappadocicum 'Rubrum' also favours sheltered positions away from strong winds, so it is often found tucked away in leafy parkland plant collections. While it can tolerate a range of soil types, it’s essential to ensure the tree is planted in a location that meets its moisture and shelter needs for optimal growth.
Pruning may be necessary to maintain its shape and health. Like many trees, the Caucasian Maple can be prone to certain pests and diseases, so regular monitoring and maintenance can help prevent issues such as leaf spots or insect infestations.
Mature height: 12-17m
