Field Maple, Common Maple
Acer campestre multi stemAbout this product
Here at Barcham, we grow Acer campestre, or Field Maple, as both a single-stem and multi-stemmed tree. Interestingly, in the Middle Ages, it was used for making musical instruments. It has gnarly bark that develops as it matures, and in the autumn, the leaves turn yellow, red, and golden brown.
Acer campestre tolerates most soil types, although it does best in rich, well-drained soils. Like many native trees, it is a tough contender and will tolerate drought, air pollution, and soil compaction.
The Field Maple, Acer campestre, is widely used throughout the UK as a hedgerow plant, and our multi-stemmed specimen is an excellent native choice for screening from ground level.
This tree is extremely versatile. It makes a nice rounded tree for parklands and can also be a welcome addition to suburban gardens, as it can be pruned during the winter.
Mature height: 7-12m
