Field Maple

This tree was cloned from a seedling raised at the William Caldwell nursery in Knutsford, Cheshire, during the hot summer of 1976. Although the nursery is no longer in operation, its legacy continues through this upright form, which has become popular as a low-maintenance urban tree for areas where space is limited.

Thriving in most free-draining soils in full sun or partial shade, Acer campestre William Caldwell can colour up beautifully in autumn. On acid soils, its small, five-lobed leaves turn orange and sometimes red, while on alkaline soils they are more likely to turn buttercup yellow, in keeping with its Field Maple parent.

Small green flowers appear in spring, followed by attractive red-winged seeds.

This hardy tree can tolerate both exposed and sheltered positions and is rated H6 for hardiness. If pruning is required, it is best carried out from late autumn to midwinter.
