Pinus sylvestris FastigiataOut of stock
Our new stock is growing! New stock will be available 1st September 2025.About this product
Pinus sylvestris Fastigiata is an upright form of the only Pine native to Europe, the Scots Pine.
This variety was introduced to the UK in the mid-1800s from parts of Europe where the Scots Pine naturally grows in the wild.
This tree has needles similar to those of the species, produced in bundles of two and a dark green colour. When young, the needles may appear more blue, enhancing the tree's ornamental appeal. Both the bark and cones closely resemble those of the Scots Pine.
What sets this attractive evergreen apart is its shape—a tight, columnar crown that remains narrow and does not broaden with age.
Pinus sylvestris Fastigiata can reach a height of around 10m at maturity, provided it is not hindered by damage to its limbs or leader caused by snow and ice, which can lead to fractures. Fortunately, this is rarely an issue in the UK.
Like most Pines, this tree prefers well-drained soil and will not tolerate water logging.
The Sentinel Pine is a good choice for gardens and parks and can be planted in spots where it would be irrational to consider the Scots Pine.
This tree's dense crown makes it an excellent choice for screening. However, its relatively slow growth means it’s best suited for those willing to wait for its full potential.
Mature Height: 7-12m
