Elstar Apple
Malus ElstarAbout this product
Malus Elstar is a flavoursome eating/dessert apple produced by a hybrid cross of Golden Delicious and Ingrid Marie that was performed in the Netherlands in the 1950s.
The Elstar Apple produces a display of pale pink flowers in the springtime that appear at a similar time to the bright green elliptical leaves typical of Malus varieties. The fruit begins to develop over the summer period, producing a full-blown bonanza of fruit by the autumn.
The foliage turns clear yellow before falling, but it is somewhat eclipsed by the fruit at this time. The apples are medium-sized, mainly red, with yellow patches. They are a popular apple for producing apple sauce.
Malus Elstar is self-sterile, meaning it needs an alternative pollination partner nearby to produce fruit. The following Malus varieties are available from Barcham Trees and are considered useful for this purpose: Malus Discovery, Malus Egremont Russet, Malus Howgate Wonder, Malus Laxton’s Superb and Malus James Grieve.
It performs best in full sun on free-draining soil.
We recommend rabbit guards for these trees if you live in an area prone to rabbits or deer.
