Sweet Gum
Liquidambar styracifluaAbout this product
Liquidambar styraciflua, or Sweet Gum, is one of the finest trees for autumn colour. Introduced from its native Eastern USA in the 17th century, it won the equivalent of the Award of Garden Merit in 1975.
Sometimes confused with maple because of its similar leaves, Liquidambar styraciflua makes a large tree with a broad, pyramidal crown if its central leader is retained. It is unique from its cultivars in that it has attractive, corky bark, which is present at all times of the year.
Like other Sweet Gum varieties, this beautiful tree is at its magnificent best in autumn when it simply seems to burn with crimson and gold.
This tree is best suited to planting where space allows it and does best in fertile, well-drained soils.
Although it will tolerate most soil conditions, it does not thrive in chalky soils.
It is a super choice for planting in areas you wish to highlight during autumn.
We also offer multi-stemmed and pleached versions of Liquidambar styraciflua.
