Malus Elstar is a flavoursome eating/dessert apple that was produced by a hybrid cross of Golden Delicious and Ingrid Marie that was performed in the Netherlands in the 1950’s.
The Elstar Apple produces a display of pale pink flowers in the spring time that appear at a similar time to the bright green elliptical leaves that are typical of Malus varieties. The fruit begins to develop over the summer period, producing a full blown bonanza of fruit by the autumn time. The foliage turns clear yellow before falling, however is somewhat eclipsed by the fruit at this time. The apples are medium sized, mainly red in colour with yellow patches. It is a popular apple for producing apple sauce.
Malus Elstar is self-sterile; this means that it needs an alternative pollination partner nearby to produce fruit. The following Malus varieties are available from Barcham Trees and are considered useful for this purpose; Malus Discovery, Malus Egremont Russet, Malus Howgate Wonder, Malus Laxton’s Superb and Malus James Grieve.
Like all fruiting apples at Barcham, this tree is grown on the semi-dwarfing rootstock M16, which produces a medium sized tree at maturity which has a rounded crown. It performs best in full sun on free draining soil.
If you live in an area prone to rabbits or deer then we recommend rabbit guards for these trees.
Mature Height: 3-7m
