Prunus accoladeAbout this product
Prunus Accolade is a hybrid cross between Prunus sargentii and Prunus x subhirtella.
This clone is a well-known and proven variety that won the First Class Certificate in 1954, the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 1952 and the updated version in 2002.
Owing to its parentage, this tree is one of the first Ornamental Cherry trees to flower in spring. It produces its prolific semi-double pink flowers very early in spring when most of the horticultural world is still in winter mode. It can sometimes produce a few flowers over the wintertime, too. However, it tends to give its most reliable display in spring.
Following the floral display, the leaves emerge dark green and relatively small for a Cherry. The foliage can sometimes seem sparse compared to other cherries. However, this is entirely normal for this tree. In autumn, you will be treated to an attractive orange-red autumn display of foliage colour courtesy of its Prunus x sargentii parentage to balance this.
This Ornamental Cherry tree is a superb performer. It is tolerant of most well-drained soils, including calcareous ones.
At maturity, this tree develops a rounded, spreading habit and forms a tree of medium size.
Prunus Accolade is great for bringing vibrant colour and life to a potentially gloomy time of year. While this display is hard to question, it is best coupled with a tree that can offer a striking foliage display that will take the limelight during the summer period when the foliage of Prunus Accolade is less spectacular.
