Oriental Plane Tree
Platanus orientalis DigitataAbout this product
Oriental Plane Tree, also known as Platanus orientalis ‘Digitata’ or Chennar Tree, is one of the most striking of Planes that provides shaded meeting places in southern European villages.
A wonderful example of its parent, Platanus orientalis, is in the Bishop’s Palace garden in Ely, not too far from Barcham.
This tree features attractively flaking bark similar to the London Plane. As Digitata matures, its grey-green bark peels in irregular patches to reveal creamy, yellowish underlayers, creating a dappled, winter‑visible trunk that enhances its architectural presence.
It has deeply cut, five‑lobed leaves unique to this cultivar.
A large tree with a rounded habit, it can reach a great age.
Magnificent in parkland and large estates, and gracing the main arterial roads of central London.
Mature height: 20 m+
