About this product

Alnus glutinosa, also known as the Common Alder, is a tree native to the UK. It is a tough contender that can thrive in all soils, even the poorest ones, and tolerates air pollution.

This single-stemmed specimen is remarkably tolerant of boggy and damp areas, as its natural habitat is precisely that: boggy land and riverbanks. This quality makes Alnus glutinosa a superior species for planting in ground liable to flooding, as it is capable of surviving for many weeks with its roots submerged in water.

We also offer a multi-stemmed Alnus glutinosa, which is well-suited for use as a natural privacy screen or to add density to planting schemes.

The Common Alder is a medium-sized tree with a broadly pyramidal-shaped crown, producing yellow catkins in March and serving as a superb host to a diverse range of wildlife.

This tree is a tough and vigorous contender, making a great addition to any native planting mix.

Common Alder requires little or no pruning.

Mature height: 17-22m

Another cultivated form of the Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa) available from Barcham is Imperialis.
