Double Flowering Horse Chestnut, Sterile Horse Chestnut
Aesculus hippocastanum BaumanniiAbout this product
Aesculus hippocastanum Baumanii, also known as the Double Flowering Horse Chestnut or Sterile Horse Chestnut, was discovered in the 1820s as a sport on a common Horse Chestnut. Its double-flowered, sterile inflorescence creates a dense and spreading crown, making it a striking and stately tree for streets and avenues.
Though it thrives on any free-draining soil, it has been susceptible to debilitating pests and diseases since 2005, making it a riskier choice in some areas. The absence of conkers due to its sterility makes it particularly suited for public spaces, where fruit drop can be a nuisance.
With a short, sturdy trunk and horizontal branching, the tree may require occasional pruning to maintain clearance for vehicles or pedestrians. However, despite being sensitive to deicing salts, it remains an excellent choice for large spaces.
Mature height: 20m+
