Hop Hornbeam
Ostrya carpinifolia pleachedOut of stock
Our new stock is growing! New stock will be available 1st September 2025.About this product
Ostrya carpinifolia, or the Hop Hornbeam, produces creamy white flowers that resemble hops. It won the Award of Merit in 1976. Introduced from Southern Europe and Western Asia in 1724, it produces a round-crowned tree at maturity.
The foliage of this tree is bright green and ridged, similar to that of the Common Hornbeam, Carpinus betulus.
In the spring, it produces an interesting display of yellow-green catkins coupled with creamy white flowers resembling hops, from which it gets its name.
This is a very tough contender, thriving in most conditions.
Our pleached Ostrya carpinifolia have 1.8m clear stems and are trained on a 1.2 x 1.2m panel.
We also offer a non-pleached version of Hop Hornbeam, ideal for those seeking a more traditional appearance.
Mature height: 12-17m
