Japanese Hornbeam
Carpinus japonicaAbout this product
Conspicuous fruiting catkins are a feature of the Japanese Hornbeam in spring. Introduced from Japan in 1895, this small tree won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002. A most beautiful and widely spreading, rounded small tree, it has heavily corrugated foliage, which is darker than the European Hornbeam, and attractive fruiting catkins which resemble hops. An excellent park tree, it has smooth, pink/grey bark. It grows well on most soils, including clay and chalk. A most useful and pretty tree for poor planting conditions. Mature height: 3-7m
