Tilia tomentosaOut of stock
Our new stock is growing! New stock will be available 1st September 2025.About this product
Introduced in 1767 from its native South Eastern Europe, Tilia tomentosa, also known as Silver Lime, is a handsome tree with a rather variable habit, mainly used for ornamental purposes. Its flowers can be toxic to bees, so this should be considered if planting in a rural setting.
A large tree of generally pyramidal habit, the Silver Lime has the advantage of being resistant to both aphids and drought. It is popular as a shade, parkway, street, or specimen tree.
It grows well in urban areas, although it requires plenty of space. Watering regularly after planting is essential for optimal growth.
Its dark green leaves have silver-white undersides, creating a beautiful effect when rustled by the breeze. In the autumn, the leaves turn yellow and remain on the tree for a long time.
The Silver Lime is suitable for avenues and parks and will stand up well to salt-laden coastal winds.
The genus name, Tilia, is Latin for Linden or Lime Tree.
Mature height: 17-22m
