Mongolian Lime, Linden

Native to the mountains of northern China and Mongolia, this Lime naturally grows at elevations higher than anywhere found in the UK. The first specimen was introduced here in 1907 at Kew Gardens.

A compact, rounded deciduous tree, it remains smaller than many other members of the Lime family, making it a useful choice where space is more limited.

The branches carry small, glossy green leaves that are broadly ovate to heart-shaped and noticeably toothed along the edges. Weather permitting, the foliage turns a bright yellow in autumn.

In early summer, fragrant yellow-green flowers appear in pendulous clusters, followed by distinctive winged fruits.

It grows well in full sun or partial shade and prefers a moist but well-drained soil. It is particularly well suited to alkaline conditions, performs best in a sheltered position and is rated H6 for hardiness.
