Basswood

Tilia heterophylla 'Prestige' is a smaller, more slender Lime cultivar, making it a good choice where the broader form of other Lindens may be too large.

Its large, broadly ovate leaves are gracefully shaped and can grow larger than a hand. In the wind, they reveal their attractive silvery undersides. The textured foliage is less susceptible to aphids, helping to reduce the sticky honeydew often associated with Lime trees.

In July, fragrant cream-coloured flowers appear in clusters of around 10-20 on corymbs approximately 8cm long. These are highly attractive to pollinators and are followed by small, brown, hairy fruits.

Young twigs are red, while the mature bark becomes dark brown and grooved. Tilia heterophylla 'Prestige' is tolerant of a wide range of well-drained soils and is particularly well suited to avenue planting.
