About this product

Sorbus latifolia Henk Vink is a species of Whitebeam originally derived from the Fountainbleau area in France, south of Paris. This tree is believed to be a hybrid of Sorbus torminalis (Wild Service Tree) and Sorbus intermedia (Swedish Whitebeam). The Service Tree of Fountainbleau is distinguished by its lovely large, round leaves that are green on the top and silvery underneath. The literal Latin translation of "latifolia" is broad-leaved, which aptly describes this tree.

In spring, the tree produces white flowers that appear in clustered corymbs. This is followed by the development of berries throughout the summer, which ripen to an orange colour in autumn. Henk Vink, a Dutch-raised clone, is notable for its rougher, greyer bark compared to the species. Sorbus latifolia Henk Vink typically forms a round-headed tree that is tough and durable, demonstrating a good tolerance for windy sites.

This tree is a worthy alternative to Sorbus aria clones, which also feature a silvery underside to their leaves. It is adaptable to most soil conditions, provided the soil is well-drained. The Service Tree of Fountainbleau is a pretty and unusual addition to a garden or parkland, offering year-round interest and serving as a staple diet for local wildlife.

In areas prone to rabbits or deer, it is advisable to use rabbit guards to protect these trees.
