Note: Small specimens are 2-2.5m tall.
Sequoia sempervirens, known as Coastal Redwood, was introduced from its native Oregon in the 1840s.
This majestic evergreen tree favours cleaner rural air and can reach more than 100 feet in height.
Driving up Route One from San Francisco to Portland, there is a cut-through called ‘Avenue of the Giants’ and what a sight to behold if you take this journey! Huge corky redwood bark trunks support feathery foliage that resembles that of our native Yew.
Sequoia sempervirens prefers well-drained moist soil with good nutrition.
It grows best in the west of the UK where there is more rainfall and humidity.
