Quercus Ilex is a native of Mediterranean countries, but it has been grown in Britain since the 1500s.
However Holm oak trees are now thought to be a native of Southern Ireland. It has dark green foliage with yellow catkins in spring producing acorns in autumn.
Perfect for those of you where space is at a premium but privacy screening is a necessity.
These Quercus ilex has a 1.8 metre clear stem and then a flat pleached frame of 1.4 metres wide by 1.8 metre high.
It can be routinely pruned to form an evergreen window above fence height which takes no width away from a small garden space It is perhaps surprisingly versatile, being suitable for coastal plantings, topiary and as stilted hedging. Holm Oak trees also tolerate shade and air pollution.
Suitable for parks and gardens but thriving best on free draining soils.
