Large specimens of Quercus frainetto, commonly known as Hungarian Oak, are supplied in 80L containers. This species, introduced to the UK in the 1830s, originates mainly from the mountainous regions of the Balkans, thriving at altitudes of up to 1,000 m. It is a relatively fast-growing tree, distinguished by its angular, ascending low branches and a short, greyish-brown trunk with fine grooves.
The deeply lobed, dark green leaves can reach up to 20 cm long and have a tough rigidity, making this tree an excellent choice for urban and rural settings. Young twigs are thick, hairy, and olive-green, transitioning to bare and grey with age. Its foliage creates a striking display in summer and turns a beautiful yellow in autumn.
Quercus frainetto produces acorns that are one-third to half enclosed by cupules covered with narrow, contiguous, hairy scales. Its branches may develop a pendulous habit at maturity, adding to its majestic appearance.
This tree is ideal for planting as an avenue or a stand-alone specimen. While the variety ‘Trump’ is tricky to distinguish from its parent at maturity, both share the same impressive characteristics.
Thriving on most well-drained soils, Quercus frainetto is a robust and attention-grabbing addition to any landscape.
Mature height: 17-22m
