Cherry Blossom Sunset Boulevard, Japanese Cherry Sunset Boulevard
Prunus Sunset BoulevardAbout this product
Prunus Sunset Boulevard was bred at the Kalmthout Arboretum in Belgium in the late 1980s with the intention of it being used in the urban environment.
The large, single white flowers are tinged with pink at the edges, giving a pretty soft colour to them which contrasts nicely with the emerging coppery foliage. The flowers are held on the tree in pairs, maximising their impact, and are held on the tree for longer than many other cherries. As the summer progresses the coppery foliage turns to green and then golden yellow in the autumn time.
The leaves are elliptical and medium-sized for a cherry. Initially bred to be an extremely columnar tree, this cherry does broaden with age to a more oval shape.
Like all cherries, this tree prefers well-drained soil and will not enjoy having wet feet.
Prunus Sunset Boulevard has been widely introduced and used as a street tree in the UK owing to its compact and tidy-shaped crown, however, it has all the qualities to make a fabulous garden tree and as such we highly recommend it for this purpose.
Also known as Cherry Blossom Sunset Boulevard, it is tough, strong growing, tidy in shape with an array of year-round interest; a perfect garden tree!
