Upright Sargents Cherry
Prunus sargentii RanchoOut of stock
Our new stock is growing! New stock will be available 1st September 2025.About this product
Prunus sargentii Rancho is an American clone of the Sargents Cherry, which has a compact and upright crown. It was raised in the USA in the 1950s and seen in Europe shortly afterwards.
The flowers appear in March and April; they are single pink and produced in abundant numbers. The foliage appears coppery upon first emergence, hardening to green as the spring progresses.
Early in the autumn, the foliage exhibits stunning tints of orange and bright crimson, which makes it easily distinguishable. The bark is also slightly darker than most cherries, almost brown-black in colour.
Prunus sargentii Rancho has a significantly upright form as a juvenile tree, broadening to columnar as it matures.
Like all cherries, this tree prefers free-draining soil and does not like water logging. If you have heavy clay soil, it may be useful to consider a Malus variety or mound plant.
Although this small tree does not reach a great height at maturity, it is perfect for year-round interest in small gardens where space is at a premium.
Mature height: 3-7m
