Portuguese Laurel
Prunus lusitanicaAbout this product
Please note: Medium-sized trees are under 3m tall.
Prunus lusitanica, or Portuguese Laurel, makes a great hedging plant or half-standard tree for the more southern parts of the UK.
Lush green leaves emerge in the spring, with dark red shoots bearing deep green ovate leaves. Small, fragrant white flowers in racemes up to 25cm long appear in early summer, followed by small, dark purple fruits. Some of these fruits are edible in autumn, but caution should be exercised as the leaves are harmful if eaten and the fruits, while edible when ripe, can be harmful if bitter. It is advisable to wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling, especially around pets such as dogs, rabbits, and rodents.
Prunus lusitanica belongs to the Rosaceae family and, like most evergreens, prefers free-draining soil to thrive. It can grow in various soil types, including chalk, clay, loam, and sand.
This versatile plant reacts well to pruning just before it starts spring growth and can even be fashioned into topiaries. It is great for gardens and thrives in sunny positions. Additionally, some species feature ornamental bark, adding further visual interest.
