At Barcham Trees, we cultivate 'Novita' as a bush for hedging, or as standard Prunus laurocerasus 'Novita' trees, or as pleached forms for screening purposes. These specimens feature a 1.8-meter clear stem and frames measuring 1.2 meters wide by 1 meter high, making them ideal for creating an attractive screen above fence lines.
The foliage of this pleached Cherry Laurel is green, glossy, and a little darker than the Rotundifolia, which makes it perfect as a dense screen, even more so when kept well-pruned.
Like the common Cherry Laurel, Novita does flower, but it produces far more abundant white blooms as it matures.
Plant Prunus laurocerasus Novita at 1-2 m centres, depending on the level of instant screening required. An effective balance is typically achieved with 1.2–1.5 m spacing.
This pleached Cherry Laurel is a tough contender and can thrive on most soils; however, it does prefer deep and fertile planting sites that are not prone to waterlogging.
As with all evergreen trees and hedges, be careful not to prune too early or late in the season; new growth, which is encouraged after pruning, must have a chance to harden up before being exposed to cold temperatures.
Mature height: 3-5m
