Prunus Cheals WeepingAbout this product
Prunus Cheals Weeping, also known as Weeping Japanese Cherry, is a very well-known, weeping variety of Cherry blossom tree.
It is also sometimes referred to as Prunus Kiku-shidare Sakura, which actually is a cultivar that has a slightly less weeping shaped crown, however it is not worth getting too torn about it, either tree is fantastic for small gardens.
This lovely tree produces frilly double pink flowers in the spring time, which are followed by the emergence of coppery green foliage that soon turn deeper green as the spring progresses to summer. In the autumn time, the foliage gives an orange-red display before falling.
As the name suggests, Prunus Cheals Weeping is notable for its steeply trailing crown that often weeps gracefully all the way down to the floor. At Barcham Trees, we tend to allow the crown to weep over at around 2.5-3m tall, making the medium-sized specimens a little smaller than other cherries.
Like most cherries this little beauty prefers to be planted in a free draining soil. It will not tolerate having wet feet at all and as such if you are on a heavy clay soil, it may be best to opt for a Malus variety instead; these will offer a stunning floral display and be comfortable with the clay soil.
Weeping Japanese Cherry tree does not grow very big at maturity; it is however capable of spreading laterally, so be sure not to cram it in too much!
The graceful crown shape is great to provide architectural structure to a garden and can be used as a specimen in the centre of a bed, or indeed as part of a colourful border.
