Lombardy Poplar
Populus nigra ItalicaAbout this product
Populus nigra Italica, known as Lombardy Poplar, was introduced into the UK way back in the 1750s and is a well-known screening and riverbank tree.
Its erect columnar habit makes it a fine architectural tree and it thrives on most soils including those prone to lying wet in winter.
The tree boasts a tall, straight trunk and upward-reaching branches adorned with distinctive tubercles. Its diamond-shaped to broadly triangular green leaves start as brownish-green and turn uniformly green in summer, followed by a yellowish-green hue in autumn. 'Italica' produces male catkin flowers and is ideal for windbreaks, parks, public gardens, and urban landscapes as a standout specimen.
A fast-growing tree, Populus nigra Italica can put on up to six feet of growth a year so it is best not to plant within 20 metres of a house.
