Our new stock is growing! New stock will be available 1st September 2025.About this product
Populus alba 'Raket,' or White Poplar, was raised in Holland in the 1950s for urban use.
It is a particularly useful choice for coastal settings, where the sea breezes constantly flicker the silver-white leaves to provide a splendid contrast. The leaves are typically lobed, with a bright green upper side and a distinctive silvery-white underside, creating a striking visual effect.
When young, the tree is notable for its columnar and slender habit, but it still makes a formidable broad/pyramidal tree when mature, so care should be taken to give it enough space to colonise. Its smooth grey-white bark in youth turns furrowed and dark grey as the tree matures, adding texture and interest over time.
Populus alba 'Raket' thrives on most soils, ranging from sandy to clayey, and prefers well-drained conditions. While it grows best in full sun, it can tolerate partial shade. As a dioecious species, male and female flowers appear on separate trees, producing spring catkins that, while not particularly showy, contribute to the tree’s lifecycle.
Its fast growth and visual appeal make it a popular choice for parks, streets, and other urban spaces. Minimal pruning is required, but routine checks can help remove any dead or diseased branches, ensuring the tree remains healthy and attractive.
Mature height: 17-22m
