Holly Olive, Fortune's Osmanthus
Osmanthus Fortunei AquifoliumAbout this product
Osmanthus fortunei Aquifolium, commonly known as Holly Olive, is a charming evergreen plant ideal for garden screening. Its glossy, toothed leaves resemble those of Holly and contribute to an upright, spreading growth habit. This slow-growing, hardy plant can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C and thrives best in a sheltered position. While it can tolerate shade, flowering may be reduced, making it preferable to plant in full sun to partial shade.
In autumn, Holly Olive produces fragrant white flowers that emit a scent reminiscent of jasmine. It thrives in well-drained soils but can adapt to a variety of soil types, including clay and loam, with a preference for slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Regular watering is essential during the growing season, particularly in dry spells; however, once established, it is drought-tolerant.
Due to its attractive foliage and fragrant flowers, Holly Olive can be used in mixed borders or as a standalone specimen plant. Minimal maintenance is required—pruning in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or damaged branches helps maintain its desired shape.
