Our new stock is growing! New stock will be available 1st September 2025.About this product
Nothofagus antarctica, also known as Antarctic Beech, is an interesting specimen introduced to Britain from Chile in the early 1830s.
This genus of tree is unique, with distinguishing features that set it apart from others. Its leaves are small and heart-shaped, exhibiting a glossy and somewhat crispy appearance that resembles that of an evergreen. However, it is important to note that this tree is deciduous.
Throughout the summer, the glossy green leaves turn golden yellow. The bark is dark in colour and covered in small creamy white lines called lenticels.
Nothofagus antarctica is a vigorous grower and is native to Chile.
It is a medium to large tree that forms a rounded habit at maturity and is best suited to sunny positions and fertile soil.
This somewhat funky tree is great for large gardens and sheltered pockets of parkland, making a super statement specimen.
It is certain to test those who think they know trees when asked which species it is.
Mature height: 7-12m
