For a pure white flowering Magnolia this great tree is hard to beat.
It superb floral display starts in April when velvety flower buds open to expand into simple and pure white flowers that smother the plant when in full cry. Emerging green leaves come slightly later and take over in May.
Magnolia loebneri Merrill makes a great multi stemmed shrubby tree and is more tolerant of slightly alkaline soils.
It thrives best on free draining land and establishes quicker if competing grass and plants are kept at least one metre radius away from its stem.
Its green leaves turn to clear yellow in the autumn before dropping in November.
