Sarah's Favourite Crape Myrtle

We grow Lagerstroemia indica "Sarah's Favourite," or Crape Myrtle, as a multi-stem bush with an ultimate height of about 5 metres, so it is an excellent tree for a small garden with bark, flowers and autumn colour interest.

For the pruners amongst you, a lot of fun can be derived with Lagerstroemia as the flowers are borne from the new season’s growth, so you won’t miss anything when winter pruned. We routinely take off half of the previous season’s growth each winter to create an architectural framework of smooth standout stems.

Its glorious white flowers can be hit or miss in the UK, appearing only in the hottest summers, but they still seem to make a regular appearance at Barcham. It is best on free-draining but moist soils; try to avoid high alkalinity.
