Ginkgo biloba Fastigiata Blagon is a French clone that originated in the 1990s and is a truly fastigiate version. Its leaf and growth habit is bushier than its parent, and its autumn show of yellow foliage is truly striking. It is an excellent tree for a garden or urban avenue as it requires little maintenance and has the toughness of its ancient history. Soil tolerances are the same as normal Ginkgo.
‘Blagon’ is a fruitless male clone, though its long-term sterility remains uncertain. Similar claims have been made about other Ginkgo cultivars, such as Princeton Sentry, which was initially believed to be male but later produced fruit. In the UK, mature Ginkgo trees, such as the specimen near Ely Cathedral, have been observed to fruit without emitting a strong odour. While the smell of Ginkgo fruit is often cited as an issue, this tends to be more prevalent in warmer, humid climates where decomposition accelerates. In the UK’s temperate conditions, unpleasant odours from Ginkgo fruit are rarely a concern.
Mature height: 17-22m
