This hardy Date Palm, scientifically known as Diospyros lotus, is a relative of the persimmon that has been cultivated since the 1590s.
It is a good choice for arboretums and plant enthusiasts who want something a little different in the garden. Native to China, this deciduous tree in the UK grows relatively small and has shiny green tapered leaves.
Tiny green/red bell-shaped flowers can be seen from mid to late summer. Female plants produce inedible purple or yellow fruits which resemble small plums.
