About this product

Cotinus coggygria Royal Purple, the Smoke Tree, was recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society in the late 1960s and has remained popular ever since. Although many classify it as a shrub, it will mature into a small four—to five-metre tree if left alone.

Its smooth oval/rounded leaves are deep purple throughout the summer, but its ‘hairy’ floral display is a wonderful addition to its interest and contrast. Thriving on most well-drained soils, it prefers a sheltered position with good light.

Perfect for a small garden, its vibrant foliage display is very dependable each summer. It is great when planted between Betula utilis Jacquemontii to show off the contrasting white birch stems and trunk.

Cotinus coggygria Royal Purple is easily kept in check with a winter prune and shape-up if required.

Mature height: 3-7m
