Cedrus deodara, also known as Deodar Cedar, is a beautiful and graceful Cedar native to the Himalayas.
In southern Europe the Deodar Cedar is grown for its timber parts, however, in Britain, it is merely planted for its unique ornamental qualities. Cedrus deodara is a large evergreen tree that like all cedars has needle-like foliage which varies in colour from bright green to a glaucous blue-green.
This tree features a distinctively trailing central leader that elegantly droops, forming a gently pendulous crown shape. Combined with its varied foliage, the tree presents a soft overall appearance.
This Cedar was introduced from the Himalayas back in 1831, favoured for planting in the grounds of stately homes due to its extensive ultimate size; it was planted extensively in many large country houses and Georgian rectories.
Cedrus deodara, like other Cedars, will perform well in most soils; however, it does not do as well on wet ground with poor drainage.
This stunning tree is a fabulous addition to very large gardens and parkland planting where there is space for it to reach its full potential.
