Cedrus atlantica (also known as Atlas Cedar) is a classical parkland tree, forming a stately and imposing specimen on large estates.
This large evergreen tree has dark green foliage and cones of approximately 5-7cm which are produced along its numerous branches. The Atlas Cedar is native to the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco and grows rapidly in its early years.
Cedrus atlantica forms an impressive structure at maturity, with wide horizontal branches that can reach impressively almost as wide as the tree becomes tall.
It thrives on most well-drained soils and can tolerate urban pollution better than Cedrus libanii or deodara. This large tree is an imposing specimen and is regarded by many as a classical parkland tree, a brief which it fills impeccably.
The extensive eventual size of this tree limits its use in urban gardens, and if planted anywhere other than open parkland consideration should be given to the tremendous size it will reach in the years to come.
Mature height: 20m+
