Christmas Camelia, Yuletide Camelia
Camellia sasanqua CleopatraAbout this product
Camellia sasanqua is a small growing evergreen tree that was introduced from China in the early 1800’s.
The evergreen leaves are small, dark green and glossy and contrast perfectly with the glorious pink fragranced flowers that appear in both spring and autumn. In fact, the Christmas/Yuletide Camellia common name has been derived due to this species propensity to produce flower very early in the season, sometimes around Christmas time!
At Barcham we grow Camellia sasanqua as a standard tree on a clear stem of between 1.8-2m; thus allowing this tree some potential as a screening tree in small gardens.
Like many evergreens this small beauty prefers a well-drained soil and this species is particularly acid loving.
The Yuletide Camellia is best planted in a sheltered spot in Southern England, as it does not perform well when subjected to cold winter winds.
Camellia sasanqua as a tree is unusual, making this a great selection for arboretum collections or sunny, south facing gardens which need some brightness to enlighten them in the gloomy winter months.
