Variegated Sycamore, Sycamore Leopoldii
Acer pseudoplatanus LeopoldiiAbout this product
This cultivar of Sycamore has pretty variegated foliage that emerges a lighter yellow/green and turns more green/cream as the summer progresses. It is particularly stunning from spring to early summer when the contrast of the foliage is the most striking.
Acer pseudoplatanus Leopoldii has the strong and healthy traits of its parent tree, Acer pseudoplatanus. It also has beautiful bright foliage that adds to its appeal. This tree grows well in various soil conditions and is especially useful in windy, coastal areas. Sycamore trees, including this variety, can withstand salt-laden winds.
Introduced in the early 1860s, it is a medium to large tree of rounded habit at maturity. Unlike some variegated trees, it does not revert to green foliage over time. This tree is ideal for exposed or coastal locations and provides unique ornamental foliage. It stands as a welcome alternative among the few trees tolerant to salt.
Though the Sycamore has gained a tarnished reputation for being a weed due to its vigour and tendency to self-seed, this striking variegated cultivar should not be overlooked, especially in areas with limited species choices.
As a word of caution, recent research has identified the foliage and samara of Sycamore as poisonous to horses, and therefore, they should not be planted in and around paddocks.
Mature height: 17-22m
