Product details

Acer platanoides, commonly known as Norwegian Maple, is a hardy urban tree that boasts numerous decorative cultivars. Introduced from Europe in the 17th century, this majestic tree has since become a staple in urban landscapes worldwide.

Tolerant of a wide range of soils, including clay, the Norwegian Maple thrives in urban environments. Its broad and spreading canopy, coupled with dense foliage, makes it an ideal choice for large urban areas, parks, and estates. Unlike its compact cousins, this tree outgrows small garden settings.

One of the most striking features of the Norwegian Maple is its classically shaped Maple leaf, which transitions to a beautiful yellow hue in autumn. In spring, similar coloured flowers adorn the tree before the leaves fully emerge. Notably, this tree's ability to tolerate shade and urban conditions has made it a favourite among city planners.

Despite its grandeur, the Norwegian Maple is surprisingly low maintenance. Once established, it requires minimal care and attention. However, it's crucial to establish a consistent watering regime during the first couple of years to ensure healthy growth and establishment.

Some of the most remarkable examples of Norwegian Maple can be found in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. In the 1970s, city planners adorned nearly every available verge with these majestic trees, showcasing their resilience and adaptability in urban landscapes.
