Product details

Acer negundo, known as the Box Elder, is a fast-growing tree most notable for its resistance to Honey Fungus.

It thrives on most soils but is also tolerant of clay and can withstand limited exposure to waterlogged ground once established. Introduced from America, this tough tree has compound leaves like an Ash which, for a Maple, is rather unique.

Acer negundo trees exhibit male flowers on one tree and female flowers on another. Identification of Box Elder trees is based on characteristics such as the pinnate leaf shape, presence of both male and female flowers, and winged fruit.

Acer negundo produces a broad and spreading habit at maturity so is best suited to large gardens or parkland. Don’t let its common name of Box Elder put you off, it doesn’t sucker!

Mature height: 12-17m
