Sorbus latifolia Henk Vink is a species of Whitebeam that was originally derived from the Fountainbleau area in France, south of Paris. This tree is thought to be a hybrid of Sorbus torminalis (Wild Service Tree) and Sorbus intermedia (Swedish Whitebeam).
The Service Tree of Fountainbleau has lovely large, round leaves that are green on the top and silvery underneath. The literal Latin translation of latifolia is broad-leaved, which describes this tree well. The flowers are white, appearing in spring in clustered corymbs following this the berries develop throughout the summer time to ripen an orange colour in autumn. The bark of Henk Vink, which is a Dutch raised clone, is notable for its rougher, greyer bark than the species.
Sorbus latifolia Henk Vink forms a round headed tree, which is tough and durable, tolerating windy sites well. It is a worthy alternative to Sorbus aria clones which also exhibit the silvery underside to the leaf. This tree will tolerate most soil conditions, providing it is well drained.
The Service tree of Fountainbleau is a pretty and unusual tree that is a great addition to a garden or parkland and will provide year round interest as well as a staple diet for the local wildlife.
If you live in an area prone to rabbits or deer then we recommend rabbit guards for these trees.
