This tree has foliage which is dark green on the top and silver- grey on the underside, giving it an interesting shimmer in the breeze.
The creamy white flowers appear in clusters in May and are followed by small orange-red fruit in the autumn time. The autumn colour is decorative and contrasts attractively with the foliage turning to a golden brown.
Sorbus intermedia Brouwers is a clonal variation of the Swedish Whitebeam which, like many clones in general, produces a reliable crown which is regular and pyramidal in shape and offers little variation between individual trees.
This tree is an extremely tough contender and will tolerate the harshest conditions; including wind exposure, coastal environments and calcareous soils. In general it will tolerate most soil conditions and thus is a very versatile tree.
There are very few varieties of tree that offer the benefit of being tolerant to coastal conditions, so this tree is perfect for schemes in an exposed or coastal location with the added benefit that it can offer a host of ornamental qualities.
It is a welcome alternative to the handful of other trees which will tolerate salt that are much plainer and less desirable for a garden planting scheme. The pretty contrasting foliage and regular shape of crown make it a good choice for avenue planting in harsh conditions and also a super candidate for up-lighting of the crown.
If you live in an area prone to rabbits or deer then we recommend rabbit guards for these trees.
