Sorbus aucuparia Joseph Rock is a stunning variety of Mountain Ash that is derived from the Chinese species. It has a pretty and delicate look to it and has won both the First Class Certificate and the Award of Merit in 1950.
This Mountain Ash presents a similar foliage to the species, with small, narrow dark green compound leaves that turn a flame red in the autumn time. The flowers are creamy white and hang in clusters, appearing around May-June. These are followed by interestingly creamy yellow berries, that also hang from the tree in clusters and whose colour contrasts fantastically with the bright red autumn colour.
Sorbus aucuparia Joseph Rock has stiffly ascending branches as a juvenile tree, going on to form a small, rounded tree at maturity and will tolerate most soil types. As a word of caution, this lovely tree can be susceptible to fire blight so it should be avoided in areas in which this is prone, or found in the hedgerows.
This Mountain Ash is a perfect selection for gardens, where its delightful show of colour will provide interest all year round. The creamy yellow berries do not look too tempting for the birds, which often means this display of colour lasts well into the winter time and can provide a beautiful picture in sharp frosts.
If you live in an area prone to rabbits or deer then we recommend rabbit guards for these trees.
