Quercus rubra, known as Red Oak, was marvelled by the colonialists in America in the 1700s and was brought back to the UK in 1724.
Renowned for its great autumn colour, this broad parkland tree flushes with yellow tinged foliage in the spring that turns red and then brown before finally dropping in November.
It thrives best on fertile well drained soils and, when young, its crown can look rather sparse and haphazard.
Quercus rubra is one of those trees that look better the older they get and its broad crown is best suited to parkland where it has the room to develop.
Mature height: 17-22m
