Product Details

Prunus yedoensis originated from Japan around 1902 and won the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2002.  It is reportedly a cross between Prunus speciosa and Prunus x subhirtella and is now thought to occurring as a natural hybrid in Japan.

The single blush white flowers emerge before the foliage in the spring, they hang in clusters of 5 or 6 and a subtly fragrant almond scent.  The leaves emerge a coppery colour towards the end of the floral display, they are serrated on the margins and deep green in colour, turning to red-orange in the autumn time.  This pretty tree also exhibits a small fruit which is dark red-black in colour and contains a stone.

Prunus yedoensis has widely arching branches that almost create a weeping effect, although is best described as broad and flat crowned.  Like all cherries this tree prefers to be planted in a well drained soil and does not enjoy having wet feet.

This tree is a stunning choice for parkland and gardens and is best planted with the space to allow the crown to spread in order to make the most of this wonderfully architectural cherry.
