Prunus padus is a unique, native, relativley late flowering cherry, also known as the Bird Cherry. Contrary to traditional "Cherry Blossom" flowers, this specimen cherry has flowers which are produced in hanging racemes in May.
This pretty and distinctive Prunus tree fruits in late summer, producing small black fruits which are edible but a little bitter. The leaves are large for a Cherry and turn from glossy green, to yellow and finally bronze in autumn.
The Bird Cherry is a tough contender and will thrive in a wide range of environments; from the rigours of the urban environment to gardens and woodlands. Like many all Cherries, this tree prefers a well drained soil.
Prunus padus is a rounded tree of medium height at maturity and is a great addition to native planting scheme.
Mature height: 7-12m
