Populus x candican Aurora is a highly decorative and vigorous variegated Poplar tree that was given the RHS Award of Merit in 1954 and was originally introduced by a nursery in Truro in 1920 from a garden in Devon.
The leaves are extremely interesting, exhibiting random variegation across the whole tree, ranging from whole creamy coloured leaves, to green leaves that are splashed cream, to creamy margined leaves; the new growth is often attractively tinged with pink. As a young tree the leaves are the most randomly variegated, and turn a dull green as the season progresses. Newly transplanted trees will often show no sign of variegation until they settle down in the second year.
Populus x candican Aurora is a fast growing Poplar, and exhibits many of the qualities seem by other species in this Genus; it is tough, will thrive on all soil types, providing it is not too dry, will tolerate water logging and is suitable for planting in exposed and coastal conditions. Unlike some other variegated specimens, this tree does not suffer from scorch from the wind or direct sunlight.
Whilst the Ontario Poplar is vigorous and large tree, it can be managed to limit the size in smaller gardens. In fact, this species responds very well to routine hard pruning of the shoots in winter, which results in a delightful display of new foliage in the spring time.
This tree is a great addition to a collection and is an underused ornamental for medium sized gardens where water logging has the potential to limit selection.
