Product Details

Small specimens are supplied 1-1.5m tall.

Pinus sylvestris Fastigiata is an upright form of the only Pine which is native to Europe, the Scots Pine.  It was introduced to the UK from Europe, where it naturally occurs in the mid 1800’s.

This tree has needles that are similar to the species, being produced in bundles of 2 and are dark green in colour.  When young these needles can appear bluer in colour, adding to this trees ornamental charm. Both the bark and cones are similar to that of the Scots Pine.

The notable distinguishing feature of this pretty, evergreen tree is its shape; it has a very tight and columnar crown which does not broaden with age.   Pinus sylvestris Fastigiata will reach around 10m in height at maturity, if it is not limited by damage to the limbs and leader by snow and ice, which can cause fracture; in the UK this is not usually a problem.  Like most Pines, this tree prefers a well drained soil and will not tolerate water logging.

The Sentinel Pine is a good choice for gardens and parks and can be planted in spots where it would be irrational to consider the Scots Pine.  It would make a useful screening tree due to its dense crown, however is generally fairly slow growing, so would be best made use of by the patient out there.

Mature Height: 7-12m
