Picea pungens Hoopsii Edith is a form of Colorado Blue Spruce that was introduced to the UK in the mid-1950s and won the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2002.

The needle like foliage of this fine specimen is a brilliant light blue/grey colour and contrasts well with the small light brown cones that mature on the tree.  It is this reliably bright and vivid foliage which makes this variety of Colorado Spruce a favoured selection.

Picea pungens Hoopsii Edith is an extremely slow growing evergreen, hence the associated price for a relatively small specimen.  It forms and maintains a dense, pyramidal shaped, crown as it matures; this uniformity really adds to the appeal of this wonderful tree.  Like most conifers, this specimen prefers a well-drained soil as it does not like having its roots sat in water at all.

Being slow growing and small at maturity makes this evergreen conifer a super choice for small gardens.  It is best planted with an array of other colours to exaggerate the interesting blue tones that this tree exhibits.  It should not be overlooked for parkland and arboretum planting, as the unique colour will provide a focal point for whatever backdrop it is being framed by.
